Robert produced another version of this drawing, almost an exact replica, dated 1781, which is now in a New York private collection.1 Carlson, in his catalogue entry for that drawing, mentions that the two figures and their accessories, along with the pedestal and the urn, derive from Robert's watercolour, Le Grand Escalier (fig. 1).2
