Follower of Simon Vouet

This evocative depiction of Saint Veronica derives from a lost original by the circle of Simon Vouet, whose influence shaped a generation of painters active in Rome and Paris during the first half of the seventeenth century. According to Arnauld Brejon de Lavergnée, the present painting is one of three known versions of this composition, all of which derive from a lost original that evidently enjoyed some degree of circulation and replication within Vouet’s artistic milieu.¹
