These monumental canvases depicting Aesop and Moenippus are based on Velázquez's famous originals of circa 1639-1641.1 Believed to have been painted as decoration for the royal hunting lodge the Torre de la Parada, where they were recorded in a 1701 inventory, the originals now hang in the Prado Museum (inv. nos. P001206 and P001207).
