Description
4¼-inch ivory dial painted in gilt with Japanese numerals, the French Vincenti movement with Brocot escapement and striking on a bell, retailer’s stamp J.W.B for J W Benson, London, the case carved as a towering billowing cloud inhabited by finely carved ivory metamorphic rabbits with lacquer clothing engaged in cooking and the presentation of food, on a foliate carved plinth base,
51cm; 20in high
This charming clock case was created in Japan for sale in Europe during a period when the hugely popular aesthetic movement drew heavily on Far East influence. The case was provided with an aperture to accept a standard French movement supplied to J W Benson in London and would have been assembled by them and probably retailed through their premises at 25 Old Bond Street. A similar, though less elaborate clock was sold by Hutchinson Scott Ltd., Skipton, Yorkshire, 26th May 2022, Lot 202.
