Los Vientos 263 — A Complete Slice of a Rare and Unusual Chilean Pallasite
Pallasite – ungrouped
Antofagasta, Chile (24° 40'S, 69° 45'W)
125 x 65 x 2 mm (4⅞ x 2½ x ⅛ inches). 70 grams (.15 lb).
A COMPLETE SLICE OF A RARE AND UNUSUAL CHILEAN PALLASITE
An extremely rare pallasite from Chile's Atacama Desert, this ungrouped pallasite has a unique look caused by near equal amounts of iron-nickel metal, olivine, and pyroxene, with the olivine and pyroxene seeming to flow throughout the meteorite rather than being found in distinct crystals. As only a single stone of this meteorite was ever found, it has a very low total known weight and only a very small number of specimens will ever be available.
