This scene displays a typical viewpoint that Jones favoured, that of painting harbours and enclosed beaches with rocks surrounding. In this particular example he is working very economically and freely. Completed in 1927, it was executed just prior to his major early period of 1928 to 1932, but this example certainly shows an increasing freedom that was not visible in his work just a couple of years prior. He has captured the essence of the scene with a distinct economy of mark-making. Like Cézanne returning to his favoured subject of Mont St. Victoire, Jones painted such harbour scenes repeatedly and was very much working in the Post-Impressionist tradition, having been trained by A.S. Hartrick who knew many of the major painters of this school.
