Chintamoni Kar (1915 - 2005) was a celebrated Indian sculptor, painter, educator, and writer who played a significant role in the development of modern Indian sculpture. Born in Kharagpur, West Bengal, he studied at the Indian Society of Oriental Art in Kolkata and later trained at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. He taught and led major art institutions, including serving as Principal of the Government College of Art & Craft in Kolkata between 1956 and 1973. Kar won a silver medal in the sculpture category at the 1948 London Olympics art competition for his work The Stag and was later awarded India’s Padma Bhushan for his contributions to the arts.
