Prabhakar Barwe

George M. Butcher was a prominent art critic for The Guardian and a stalwart supporter of the burgeoning South Asian modern art scene. He spent more than two years in India and befriended many artists, gallerists and art critics. Using his knowledge and contacts, he curated several important shows, most notably the Indian Pavilion at the landmark Man and His World exhibition in Montreal in 1968, for which much of the material was drawn from his own collection. Butcher was among the first writers to assert the remarkable contributions of South Asian modern artists to global modernism and left an indelible mark on South Asian art history.
