This painting is from a series that Nolan began in the 1950s and continued in the 1960s, inspired by the expedition of Burke & Wills from Cooper's Creek to the Gulf of Carpentania described in Alan Moorehead, Cooper's Creek, Hamish Hamilton, London, 1963.
