Black and white chalk and grey wash, within grey ink framing lines, on grey paper;

bears inscription in black chalk, verso: terburg

by inheritance to his grandson, Reinhold von Liphart (c.1870-c.1920), Dorpat (L.1758);

Carlos Gaa (1871-circa 1925), Mannheim (L.538a),

sale, Leipzig, C.G. Boerner, 9-10 May 1930, lot 484 (as Gerard Terborch);

bears another unidentified mark, verso (coat of arms within a circle with illegible text; not in Lugt)

This characterful figure study resembles certain drawings that have sometimes been attributed to the Flemish artist Jan Miel (1599-1664), who was probably born in Antwerp but worked for many years in Italy, and died in Turin.
