Madonna and Child adored by two Saints


Pen and brown ink and wash over traces of black chalk;

bears old attribution in pen and ink: Piazeta

Vernon Wethered (1865-1952), London,

by inheritance to the present owner

Typical of Pellegrini's energetic use of the pen combined with abundant brown wash, the present study is a rare example of Pellegrini's draftsmanship. The composition is reminiscent of the painted works by another master from the Veneto, Sebastiano Ricci (1659-1734). Pellegrini and Ricci were in England together for about a year in 1712-1713. The drawing does not seem to be related to any surviving paintings by Pellegrini.
