Bust of Stefano Brancaccio (1618–1682)

inscribed: DOMINVS CHRISTIANVS DI / PRIMVS / GRATIA below the coat of arms, and inscribed: Brancaccio Lustri in pencil to the reverse

marble

90cm., 35½in.

This impressive bust corresponds to the portrait of Stefano Brancaccio (1618–1682) on the tomb monument he shared with his uncle, Cardinal Francesco Maria Brancaccio (1592-1675), in the Church of Sant'Angelo a Nilo in Naples. The tomb was executed by the sculptors Pietro and Bartolomeo Ghetti, who trained in the workshop of Gianlorenzo Bernini and were active in Naples from the 1770s.

A member of the prominent Neapolitan Brancaccio family, Stefano became Cardinal in 1681.
