During the 1960s and 70s, as the Paris, London and New York branches increasingly forged their own independent paths, Cartier worked with a small number of watch and jewellery brands to collaborate on the design of new wristwatch models.
The design of this Stepped Tank model can be attributed to the jeweller Alexis Barthelay. A prestigious Parisian brand founded in the 1950s, Alexis Barthelay was renowned for their luxurious fusion of fine jewellery and high-end watchmaking. Alexis Barthelay’s elegant and artistic designs of the 1960s and 70s earned the firm high-profile clients, including celebrities and royalty. Barthelay’s expertise in luxury jewellery and watchmaking, along with the jeweller’s unique designs, made the firm a natural partner with whom Cartier could work with on the design of a select number of models. The case of the watch itself was made by Cartier and the outside back is punched with Cartier’s own Swiss Poinçon de Maître (hammer head key mark 23) which was registered at La Chaux de Fonds. This watch is fitted with its original Cartier New York deployant buckle.
