The Cartier Santos-Dumont is named after the famed aeronaut, sportsman, and inventor Alberto Santos-Dumont, who moved to France to pursue his passion for aviation. There, he formed a close friendship with Louis Cartier, who, during the course of their relationship, created a prototype wristwatch tailored to Santos-Dumont’s needs.
Following its introduction, the design quickly achieved commercial success, and the Santos, along with its broader collection, has remained a cornerstone of the Cartier lineup ever since.
The present example, unveiled at Watches and Wonders 2022, reinterprets the model with a platinum case in place of the classic stainless steel. The bezel and the front of the lugs are adorned with burgundy lacquer inlays, providing a striking contrast to the ruby cabochon set into the crown.
Its three-dimensional dial creates a captivating optical effect, with layered square motifs that enhance the watch’s depth and presence on the wrist. The case back is engraved with the signature of Alberto Santos-Dumont, serving as a tribute to the pioneering figure who inspired its creation.
Classic, sleek, and elegant, the present lot is offered in near unworn condition and is accompanied by its warranty card.
