F.P. Journe, whose timepieces are deeply rooted in the traditions of 18th‑century watchmaking, surprised the horological world in 2011 with the introduction of his “Sport” collection. Made from ultra‑lightweight metal cases and featuring bolder, sportier dial designs and color palettes, the series marked a distinct departure from the brand’s classical aesthetic. According to Journe, the collection was inspired by a collector seeking an ultra‑light sports watch powered by a true high‑horology movement.
The first version of the Octa Sport, such as the present lot, was remarkably lightweight and made out of aluminum, weighing just 57 grams. The matte aluminium dial is enlivened by subtle yet effective accents in red and white, visible in the date numerals within the signature oversized apertures, the day/night indication, the small seconds display, and the model designation beneath 12 o’clock. These touches of red further underscore the sporty character of the piece.
It is further fitted with an aluminium cal. 1300.3, which marks the first movement ever to be created from this material and is an unusual choice for the brand given their preference for brass movements for early examples and current pink gold movements found on other models.
Additionally, rubber inserts are integrated along the sides of the case and at the end of each bracelet link, which was an innovative design element that both enhances shock resistance and lends the watch its unmistakable aesthetic identity. This, together with the slim, rope-textured rubberised crown, sets the model apart with a striking and highly original appearance.
Offered in excellent condition and with its box and papers, the present Octa Sport was discontinued in 2014 after a brief three-year production period. It represents a rare opportunity to acquire a highly versatile and innovative aluminium sports watch from one of the most important independent watchmakers of the modern era.
