Rolex introduced the reference 6239 in 1963 as the very first Cosmograph Daytona, and today it stands as one of the most sought-after vintage chronograph wristwatches ever produced. Over time, the Daytona evolved through a series of design and technical refinements, resulting in numerous references and a wide array of variations within each.
One of the most significant changes with the introduction of the 6239 was the relocation of the tachymeter scale from the dial, as seen on the reference 6238, to an enlarged external bezel. This modification increased the watch’s diameter by 1mm and allowed for a larger dial surface, enabling more varied and intricate dial designs. Among these were the celebrated “exotic” dials, manufactured by Singer, featuring either two-color layouts in white or black, or three-color configurations in white or black accented with red, as seen on the present example.
Today, the reference 6239 fitted with the “Paul Newman” exotic dial is among the most coveted Daytona variants, prized for its rarity, distinctive aesthetics, and legendary place in horological history.
