The Patek Philippe ref. 5951P represents one of the boldest and most unconventional interpretations of the split-seconds chronograph ever produced by the manufacture. First introduced in 2015, the reference combines one of watchmaking’s most technically demanding complications, the rattrapante monopusher chronograph, with a contemporary aesthetic rarely associated with Patek Philippe, yet still deeply rooted in its history, likely drawing inspiration from the unique 1928 single-button white gold Patek Philippe chronograph (movement no. 198’207). Housed in a beautifully constructed 37mm platinum case, the watch features a snap-on sapphire exhibition caseback revealing what was, at the time of its introduction, the thinnest column-wheel split-seconds chronograph movement ever produced. Comprising over 400 individual components while measuring a scarcely believable 7.3mm in thickness, the calibre represents an extraordinary feat of mechanical engineering and traditional watchmaking. The monopusher chronograph configuration further enhances the purity and elegance of the watch, allowing all chronograph functions to be controlled through the crown alone.
The model immediately distinguished itself through its black lacquered dial with vivid red chronograph accents and applied “indexes obus,” creating a striking contrast between traditional haute horlogerie and modern sporting design. Of particular interest in the present example are the hands and indexes. Ordinarily found in polished white gold, the present watch features unusually bright white hands and indexes, creating a dramatic and highly legible contrast against the lacquered dial, a feature believed to be present on only approximately 10 examples of the ref. 5951P.
Produced in extremely limited numbers, thought to total only approximately 150 examples across all configurations between 2010 and 2015, the ref. 5951P occupies a unique position within modern Patek Philippe production, bridging the gap between classical complication watchmaking and contemporary design language. As a result, the reference has become one of the most collectible and distinctive modern high-complication wristwatches produced by the manufacture. The present watch is offered in very good condition and accompanied by its full suite of accessories.
