In 1996, Patek Philippe introduced a significant innovation in calendar watchmaking with the launch of its Annual Calendar mechanism. Designed to automatically display the month, day of the week, and the correct date for months of 30 and 31 days, the system requires adjustment only once per year, at the end of February. It offered a clever and user-friendly alternative to the perpetual calendar, combining mechanical sophistication with everyday practicality.

The goal was clear: to create a complicated timepiece that was less complex to produce and more accessible, without compromising on refinement. In doing so, Patek Philippe expanded its collection of complicated watches while appealing to a broader audience seeking a watch suitable for daily wear.

The first model to house this innovation was the Patek Philippe Ref. 5035, featuring three subsidiary dials for the day, month, and 24-hour indication. Over time, the design evolved, and in 2006 the brand introduced the Patek Philippe Ref. 5396, the first Annual Calendar presented in a Calatrava-style case. This reference refined the display with twin in-line apertures for the day and month, offering a cleaner and more classical aesthetic.

One of the most contemporary interpretations of this model is the present Patek Philippe Ref. 5396G-014. Its anthracite sunburst dial harmonizes beautifully with the near-monochromatic tones of the applied numerals, hands, and the silvered moon-phase display. Paired with a white gold case, the overall composition is cohesive and understated.

The present example is offered in very good condition and is accompanied by its presentation box, booklets, and Certificate of Origin.
