The year 1988 marked several significant milestones for Rolex as the Crown sunsetted the iconic four-digit Daytona references and announced a new generation of chronographs that will take its place. This new iteration of Rolex's famous Daytona were unveiled at the Baselworld International Watch Show, and represented a significant technological breakthrough, housing the modified Zenith El Primero caliber 4030. The Zenith movements powering these watches were the first automatic movements ever housed in a Daytona, and symbolizes the transition between vintage four-digit chronograph references and the contemporary Daytonas beloved today.
These 'Zenith' Daytonas, nickname by collectors after its movement, were in production from 1988-2000 and underwent five distinct evolutions as Rolex continuously refined its design. The present Reference 16528 in yellow gold features an attractive Mark 3 dial where the '6' in the 6 o’clock subdial is inverted, that is highly sought after by collectors.
