Vianney Halter's La Résonnance is a rare and stunning timepiece released in 2022 and built in the famous Vallée de Joux in Switzerland. It features a genuine and unusual complication: acoustic resonance between two balance-spring oscillators. It required years of research and development to reach this point. This fully titanium watch weighs only 35 grams. Such complexity limits the brand's ability to produce more than two pieces per year.
The case is simple, yet highly intricate. It is a titanium unibody surrounded by three crystals. The four lugs are independent from the case and bolted to it from the inside. This allows for the complete restoration of the case without altering its shape. The crown is positioned at 9 o'clock to allow viewing of the acoustic resonance through the sapphire crystal at 3 o'clock.
The new VH222 calibre is unique in its own right. It is a 55-piece skeletonised movement without a main plate. Unlike most timepieces, which require step-by-step disassembly, this calibre can be disassembled in blocks in any order. It features two barrels providing a 100-hour power reserve, each with a discreet power reserve indicator visible from the caseback. This calibre is a fantastic example of complex simplicity — there is nothing superfluous about it.
The coupling of the two balance springs is achieved through acoustic wave transmission via a solid medium. To accomplish this, the balances must be positioned as close as possible to one another and linked by the smallest bridge possible. Two types of resonance can occur: the first when the balances are synchronised and moving in parallel, the second when they are in full opposition — when one is fully contracted and the other fully expanded.
With this piece, Vianney Halter sought to push the boundaries of watchmaking. He used as few parts as possible, underscoring the importance of each one. The level of craftsmanship evident in every component reflects the meticulous attention given to each detail of this watch. To own such a groundbreaking timepiece is a privilege reserved for only a handful of collectors.
