The elusive Rolex reference 4537 holds a central place in the history of Rolex. Introduced in 1946, it was the first chronograph model of the crowned brand to feature an Oyster case, as well as pump pushers and a 36 mm diameter. Thanks to these innovations, the dial proudly bears the Oyster designation.
With fewer than one hundred examples believed to have been produced across all metals, the reference 4537 paved the way for the later Daytona models.
Hidden in a distinguished private collection for twenty years, the present example is cased in stainless steel and fitted with a contrasting silvered dial with gold indexes and matching hands. While many dials from this period have been restored or heavily aged, this specimen retains its signature as well as its tachymeter and telemeter scales in impressive condition. The dial has developed a soft ivory patina, beautifully complementing the gold indexes.
Further enhancing its desirability, the dial bears the prestigious Serpico y Laino signature, the famed Caracas retailer known for supplying some of the most important watches to the South American market, whose name today is synonymous with rarity and provenance among collectors.
