Affectionately nicknamed “Disco Volante” (“flying saucer” in Italian), the Patek Philippe reference 2552 is distinguished by its elegant stepped case and balanced proportions. Produced between 1954 and 1960, it belongs to the early generation of the manufacture’s automatic wristwatches and was among the references fitted with Patek Philippe’s celebrated self-winding caliber 12-600.
Manufactured by A. Wenger, with casemaker key no. 1, the case features a broad stepped bezel, gracefully downturned lugs, the characteristic double “PP” crown, and a screw-down case back. Its 36mm diameter offers a great presence on the wrist.
According to scholarship, 652 examples of reference 2552 were produced. At its heart beats the legendary caliber 12-600, Patek Philippe’s first automatic movement, admired for its Geneva Seal finishing, 18K gold guilloché rotor, and patented Gyromax balance.
Fresh to the auction market, the present watch is preserved in excellent condition. The case has developed an attractive warm patina while retaining elegant definition and strong hallmarks to the outer lugs. The caseback still bears a Patek Philippe service sticker, and the movement is stamped “HOX,” confirming delivery to the American market—a desirable detail further enhancing the watch’s historical appeal.
