Introduced in 1963, the reference 6239 marked the beginning of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona and the emergence of one of the most celebrated chronographs ever produced by Rolex. It was the first to bear the Cosmograph designation and introduced key design evolutions, notably the tachymeter scale relocated from the dial to the bezel, allowing for a clearer and more dynamic dial layout. The model also debuted contrasting subsidiary dials, enhancing legibility while giving rise to a highly distinctive aesthetic.
The present example is particularly notable for its Paul Newman dial, famously associated with Paul Newman following his appearance wearing the watch during the promotion of the 1969 film Winning. Its three colour black dial, with white outer track and red accents echoed in the Daytona signature, is beautifully preserved and offers a striking visual presence.
Fitted with a bezel graduated to 300 units, a calibre 722-1, and a 7835 riveted bracelet, the watch reflects one of the final evolutions of the reference before its replacement at the end of the decade. Accompanied by its retailer’s guarantee, Rolex guarantee, leather bifold, and original presentation, this example represents a highly attractive and complete offering of an iconic chronograph.
