Commonly referred to as the “President’s watch,” the Rolex Day-Date has held iconic status since its introduction in 1956. Traditionally reserved for precious metals, the model represents one of the most diverse families within Rolex’s production, encompassing a wide range of sizes, case materials, dial variations, and gem-set configurations.
Among these, platinum represents the most exclusive offering. Often mistaken for steel or white gold, it is distinguished by subtle details, most notably the smooth bezel, a defining feature of platinum Day-Date references.
The present Rolex Day-Date reference 18206 is a striking and exceptionally rare example, featuring a platinum case with a smooth bezel and a natural onyx dial. While platinum cases and hardstone dials exist individually, their combination is seldom encountered, enhancing the desirability of the present watch. The onyx dial showcases silver printing, precisely matched aperture frames, and a no-lume handset, creating a refined monochromatic aesthetic.
The dial was produced by Beyeler, the esteemed Swiss manufacturer long associated with Rolex, and is characterised by the “B” signature on the reverse of the base plate. Notably, the base plate features small drilled holes, indicating it was originally intended for applied indexes. These were never fitted, suggesting the plate was later repurposed for the present onyx configuration.
Introduced in 1988, the reference 18200 series was fitted with the calibre 3155, incorporating the practical double quick-set function, allowing independent adjustment of both the day and date.
The perfect wrist companion, the present Day-Date 18206 is a rare and elegant expression of the model, uniting the understated refinement of platinum with the striking depth of onyx, while its dial details offer compelling points of interest for the discerning collector.
