The present reference 5059 stands as somewhat of a riddle. Launched in 1998 and discontinued in 2006, it featured a distinctive retrograde perpetual calendar and officer case. The standard dials were white with black roman numerals, giving the watches a very contrasting appearance. However, the present example is fitted with a rose toned dial, as confirmed in the Certificate of Origin, and grey gold indices and hands. Conspicuously, it was also sold over 10 years after the reference was discontinued and features the Patek Philippe seal on the movement, not the Geneva seal like all other production examples. Because the Patek Philippe seal was only created in 2009, the only conclusion is that this watch was made “out of series”, possibly as part of a special request or commission.
