Introduced by Patek Philippe in 1986, the Reference 3970 succeeded the 2499 and became part of a lineage of perpetual calendar chronographs that are now iconic in 20th century watchmaking. As the first serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph from Patek Philippe, the 3970 integrated modern production techniques, marking a departure from traditional methods. Although discontinued in 2004, it gained significant acclaim during its production run, becoming a highly coveted model among collectors. The 3970 represents a transitional phase for Patek Philippe, following the original 1518 and 2499, and is associated with the neo-vintage era of Patek wristwatches.
The present example could be identified as third series by the baton hands, where the previous two series had leaf hands. The applied markers have also been change to pointed and faceted compared to the first and second series. The dial also has a brighter shade, with the printing showing a starker contrast. There is an estimate of 1350 third series pieces made between 1989 and 1995 according to literature.
