The reference 3940 was an important development in Patek Philippe’s storied perpetual calendar lineage. Indeed, it followed a long line of beloved references all using the then standard apertured date and month display, a trend which had run for decades up until that point. With the new calibre 240Q, the new reference instead placed all indications within the three sub-dials, allowing for a refreshed aesthetic and also a slimmer case profile thanks to the micro-rotor architecture. Both the movement and the reference have since become hallowed in the realm of Patek Philippe collecting. The present second series can be identified by the attractive two-tone 9 o’clock sub-dial, as well as a pair of crisp hallmarks on the left side case band.
