The reference 3940 is one of the most elegant, and indeed one of the most favoured perpetual calendars from Patek Philippe's collection. It was also the first reference to feature the calibre 240, a landmark micro-rotor movement which has proven to be both visually beautiful but also extremely capable, laying the groundwork for a new generation of perpetual calendars that are still in production today.

With an extensive history, production of this watch started in the 1980s and ran until 2007, with a total of four series identified. The present example can be identified as the 2nd series of the collection, distinguishable for the lack of accent in the "E" of "GENEVE" text, the sub-dials which are no longer sunken like the 1st series, and the use of the calibre 240 Q, presenting an excellent opportunity for the discerning collector.
