For most of the brand’s history, Cartier was never a mass producer of wristwatches. In the early to mid-twentieth century, the maison instead focused on artistry and design, producing small batches of distinctly shaped and tastefully designed cases combined with outsourced movements. The era birthed extremely important models such as the Tank Louis, Tank Cintrée, and eventually the Crash. Two lesser known models that were also born at the same time were the Parrallélogram and Losange, which were housed in a rhombus-shaped case and possibly made as drivers watches. Decades later as part of the revamped Cartier Paris Collection initiative created in the 1990s to revive and reoffer some of the brand’s most coveted creations, these models were reinterpreted into the Asymétrique.
The present reference 2488 belongs to the first run of new Asymétriques created by Cartier Paris in 1996. Featuring a sparse dial with minimalistic arabic numerals and no chemin-de-fer railroad minute track, this reference stands out as one of the more minimalist heritage designs created by Cartier during this era. Made in only 300 pieces, this edition is coveted and sought after for its iconic case shape and historical importance.
