An update on the coveted reference 3448, which was the first serially produced automatic perpetual calendar by Patek Philippe and featured the beloved angular “disco volante” case design, the 3450 was released in 1981 with a revamped calibre. Significantly, it built upon the historic achievements of its predecessor with another milestone: it was the serially produced Patek Philippe perpetual calendar wristwatch to display leap years. So while retaining a similar overall design to the 3448, though with slightly shorter lugs and a different bezel profile, it added a small aperture between 3 and 4 o’clock for a leap year indication.
Two versions of the 3450 exist, one with a “red dot” denoting the leap year, while the configuration fitted within the present watch features an all numerical display of the current 4 year cycle. The reference was made in very limited quantities, with the two configurations combining to total only around 100 examples that have surfaced on the market so far. The combination of the distinct case shape and historic complication make the 3450 a reference worth collecting by any connoisseur.
