Unbeknownst to most people, the first IWC wristwatch to house the famous Kurt Klaus perpetual calendar was not the famous Da Vinci, but was in fact a member of the Ingenieur line. Produced for a very short time between 1987 and 1992, the present reference 3540 was the successor to that first model, and served as the equally complicated but slimmer and dressier compatriot to the bolder Da Vinci. Though IWC was not early to the perpetual calendar party, the ingenious Kurt Klaus mechanism allowed the entire complication to be adjusted by the crown, no small feat considering Audemars Piguet first introduced this ability in 2025.
