Even though sports models have always dominated Rolex collectibility, the undisputed flagship of the brand has always been the Day-Date. Only serially produced in precious metals, it has firmly occupied the status of the most prestigious model line ever produced by Rolex.
What elevates the present watch even further beyond the prestige of the model is the Khanjar logo found above 6 o’clock, indicating that the watch was once presented by Sultan Qaboos of Oman as a gift. The story goes that the Sultan, who had a great affinity for horology, would order fine timepieces from his retailer, Asprey of London. These watches would then be stamped with the Royal Khanjar logo, occupying the position where dial text is usually found to signify authenticity.
It is said that Sultan Qaboos would present stainless steel watches to his subjects and precious metal watches to foreign dignitaries. The present watch is set with diamonds and cased in platinum, the rarest of all the case metals for vintage Rolex, and so presumably must have been presented to the most important of guests. The case back is further engraved “Asprey”, another testament to its provenance and authenticity.
