Though it may be hard to believe, when the reference 3445 was launched in 1961, it was the first Patek Philippe wristwatch to ever feature the simple date complication, meaning that it was not part of a more intricate calendar. Also automatic and waterproof, it can be said that this watch was as futureproof as they came for the period.

The present 3445 belongs to the second series, based on the serial range and several other differentiating features which further speak to its modernity: the signature is printed instead of hard enamelled, and the winding crown features the Calatrava cross and not the old PP style. It can be argued that the modern Calatrava blueprint was laid by the 3445, particularly the second series.
