Calatrava, a word that is now synonymous with Patek Philippe, is the name of a castle in the Castille region of Spain, and the Calatrava Cross is the emblem of the order of knights who banded together in 1157 to defend it. In 1887, Patek Philippe chose the symbol to register as a trademark, inextricably linking the two for eternity.
Though the Calatrava name was not given to a model family until the 1980s, it was retrospectively applied to most vintage Patek Philippe watches that fit the same criteria: 2 or 3 hand simple dress watches with round cases. The present reference 3416 was an ultra-thin offering within the line, with tasty angular lugs and classic, minimal dial.
