This ingenious miniature, pocket-sized photo frame was made by Cartier in collaboration with James Schulz. James Schulz was a highly regarded independent watchmaker based in New York during the early to mid-20th century. He began his career at Tiffany & Co. before later collaborating with Cartier. Schulz became renowned for his custom-made timepieces, including an ultra-complicated wristwatch made in the late 1920s. Widely considered one of the most famous vintage wristwatches of all time, that exceptional piece featured a movement supplied by Victorin Piguet and combined a single-button chronograph with a perpetual calendar and minute repeater.

Cartier in Motion, Curated by Norman Foster. Madrid: Ivory Press, 2017. See p. 212 for a very similar New York example dating to 1947. On this example the watch’s dial is visible to the interior of the frame. The exterior of the case carries the same applied Art Deco inspired motif.
