In the watch shown here, Fabergé’s influence on Cartier’s early watchmaking style is unmistakable. The green guilloché enamel case back demonstrates a level of craftsmanship reminiscent of Fabergé’s exquisite objets d’art. The translucent enamel creates a luminous effect, allowing the intricate engine-turned pattern beneath to shimmer through. At the centre of the case back, a diamond-set star-form motif adds brilliance and symmetry, reflecting the opulent yet refined decorative style favoured by Russian aristocracy. The design is completed with an opaque white enamel scalloped border framing the edge of the case back, mirrored on the case front, which also features white enamel ‘pearls’ encircling the dial – details that harmoniously enhance the watch’s elegance. Pendant watches such as this epitomised the merging of functional timekeeping and decorative artistry expected of Cartier. Typically exceptionally slim, these watches owed their refined aesthetic to the fine, ultra-thin movements supplied under Cartier’s 1907 agreement with Edmond Jaeger. Versatile designs became a hallmark of the Maison, catering to the evolving tastes of discerning clients and reflecting a growing emphasis on adaptability and innovation.
