The “Pour le Mérite” name is reserved for some of A. Lange & Söhne’s most intricately engineered watches. Even though the brand had been a respected name in German watches for a century, the aftermath of World War II and the subsequent nationalization of the German watch industry led to the disappearance of the A. Lange & Söhne. It wasn't until 1994, after the reunification of Germany, that the brand was revived by Ferdinand Lange's great-grandson, Walter Lange, in partnership with watch industry veteran Günter Blümlein. At the relaunch of the brand, four collections were introduced as the pillars of the new A. Lange & Söhne: the flagship Lange 1, the classic Saxonia, the characterful Arkade and the haute horlogerie Tourbillon “Pour le Mérite”.

The A. Lange & Söhne Tourbillon "Pour le Mérite" represents a pinnacle of technical innovation in watchmaking, showcasing the brand's dedication to precision and mechanical mastery. At the heart of this timepiece lies the groundbreaking combination of a tourbillon and a chain and fusée transmission, a first in wristwatch history. The chain and fusée is one of the most effective ways of improving the accuracy of a watch. It is a constant force mechanism which compensates for the constantly lowering tension in the mainspring as it winds down from full power by using an extremely miniaturised chain wrapped around a cassette of changing diameter in accordance with the state of winding. The engineering behind such mechanisms is astonishing, with the chain alone containing 636 components measuring only 0.25 mm tall, all hand assembled and is visible through a cut out in the three quarter plate.

By reintroducing advanced mechanisms like the chain and fusée transmission and combining them with the aesthetic and artisanal traditions that define the brand, A. Lange & Söhne has firmly reestablished itself as a leader in luxury watchmaking. The limited production run of this masterpiece, with only 150 pieces made in all golds, underscores its exclusivity and the meticulous effort invested in each piece, making it a symbol of precision, heritage, and the relentless pursuit of perfection.
