The invention of the World Time complication by Louis Cottier in 1931 marked one of the most important developments in twentieth-century horology, offering travellers the ability to read the time across all 24 global time zones simultaneously through a rotating city ring and 24-hour display. Elegant in both concept and execution, Cottier's invention revolutionized the way international timekeeping could be displayed on a wristwatch and quickly attracted the attention of the world's most prestigious manufactures. Patek Philippe embraced the innovation with the introduction of its first World Time wristwatch, the Reference 1415, in 1939. Produced until 1954, the model evolved throughout its lifespan, with a number of highly desirable examples featuring exquisite cloisonné enamel scenes at the centre of the dial. Following a hiatus of more than three decades, Patek Philippe revived the World Time collection, reintroducing the iconic rotating city and 24-hour discs while continuing to celebrate the enamelling artistry that had become synonymous with its most important World Time creations.

The present Reference 5531 represents a landmark chapter in the evolution of this historic complication. Introduced in 2017, it became the first wristwatch to combine a World Time complication with a minute repeater that chimes the local time displayed on the dial, a feat previously considered exceptionally difficult to achieve. Developing such a mechanism presented a considerable technical challenge for Patek Philippe. To accomplish this, the manufacture engineered an hour snail that remains continuously linked to the World Time system, allowing it to advance in one-hour increments whenever the city disc is adjusted. This ingenious solution ensures that the minute repeater always strikes the correct local time, regardless of the selected time zone. By marrying two of the manufacture's most celebrated complications within a single timepiece, the 5531 stands as a testament to Patek Philippe's enduring pursuit of innovation and mechanical excellence.
