Not a chronometer nor automatic, the Oyster Royal is a niche segment of the collecting sphere reserved for true enthusiasts and connoisseurs. The ‘Royal’ moniker, which may at first seem to link to a design feature, is actually attributed to the major markets where Oyster Royals were exported to: Great Britain and its colonies.

Though it does not feature a perpetual movement like its Bubbleback cousins, the present example does share many of the most desirable features found in Rolexes of that collecting segment, including the original, highly coveted and attractive triangular red seconds hand, blued leaf handset, oversized ‘Oyster Patent’ crown and a beautiful tropical patina over dial which still features its original printing. A further standout feature is the double signature of the famous English retailer Mappin, now Mappin & Webb. This example is, at the same time, a time capsule of originality, a showcase of the charm of patina, and testament to Rolex’s deep history.
