As the world entered the golden age of jet travel, the now defunct Pan American Airways asked Rolex for a watch that could handle multiple time zones at once, giving birth to the GMT-Master line. While we saw plenty of references with its now iconic two-colour 24 hours rotating bezel that defined aviation timekeeping, the following three references represent the bridge between vintage and contemporary GMT-Master models.
The 16760, dubbed the ‘Fat Lady’ for its unusually thick case, was the first serially produced Rolex with the now iconic ‘GMT-Master II’ designation. It was the first to feature an independently adjustable 12-hour hand. Running alongside it was the reference 16700, which many consider to be the last and final ‘pure’ iteration of the original classic GMT-master, and was indeed the last to feature the ‘GMT-Master’ designation on the dial. Lastly, the final reference that can truly be considered of neo-vintage, the reference 16710 came as a refinement that perfected the modern five-digit GMT formula.

The present reference was also the first to use the now cult-classic ‘Coke’ bezel colourway, deviating from the more commonly found ‘Pepsi’. The new functionality also called for a completely new movement, and due to its increased size to accommodate the additional complication, the 16760 was noticeably thicker than previous GMT-Masters, earning it the nickname “Fat Lady”. Intriguingly, most known Fat Ladies are fitted with the standard glossy dial of the period, while the present example features a matte dial, more commonly associated with earlier models.
