Rugged and reliable. That was what Rolex had in mind when the model was unveiled in 1963 initially as the ‘Cosmograph’. Eventually adopted by drivers, the tachymeter featured on the bezel allowed racers such as Paul Newman to measure their speed over a known distance. It was not until the late 1980s, over 20 years since its initial release, when the Daytona models started to become increasingly popular among collectors. Noticing the sudden demand for Daytona, Rolex naturally started to introduce references with precious stones to what was previously just a tool watch.

Although we did see exotic examples set with diamonds in the past as early as 1986, the Rainbow Daytona symbolized something entirely different. Slowly but surely, the Daytona became the ideological flagship model for Rolex that symbolised luxury rather than being just a reliable tool. Featuring 36 baguette-cut, rainbow-coloured sapphires on the bezel and 56 brilliant cut diamonds throughout the lug hoods and crown guard, the present model was the most outlandish Daytona ever serially produced. Naturally, due to the visually striking elements and the scarcity of the organically sourced stones, the Rainbow Daytona is today one of the most exclusive timepieces produced by Rolex and strictly off-catalogue.
