Introduced in 2002, the Reference 5102 Celestial is among Patek Philippe's most celebrated astronomical wristwatches, displaying a rotating chart of the Northern Hemisphere night sky together with the meridian passage of Sirius, the lunar orbit and moon phases. The extraordinary complexity of the model reflects the manufacture's pursuit of technical and astronomical precision.

The present watch is particularly notable for being fitted with the unusual calibre ET 839 N°3 rather than the standard production movement. Believed to originate from Patek Philippe's research and development programme, the ET designation suggests that this watch may have been part of a pre-production test series created prior to the official launch of the Reference 5102, making it an exceptionally rare and historically significant example.
