In 1864, Mr. Hauser and Mr. Zivy founded Hauser Zivy & Cie, establishing branches in Mexico City and Paris. The jewelry store in Mexico City was named La Esmeralda. Renowned as the "Tiffany of Central America," La Esmeralda occupied a classic European-style building dating back to the 18th century, which remains a landmark in Mexico City to this day. With their discerning taste, the two founders sourced high-quality jewelry, timepieces, and luxury lifestyle goods from Europe for their clientele, making the firm one of the most important jewelers of the second half of the 19th century.

The present La Esmeralda pocket watch, numbered 6,666, was made around 1895 and features a sonnerie, minute repeater, perpetual calendar, chronograph, and moon phases display. As a grand complication timepiece representing the brand's highest level of craftsmanship, its movement ébauche was supplied by the renowned Louis-Elisée Piguet workshop in the Vallée de Joux.

Apart from its impressive complications, this pocket watch also received a chronometer certification from the Neuchâtel Observatory, a remarkable achievement considering that precision timekeeping was not typically the primary focus of a highly complicated pocket watch. This distinction further attests to the exceptional quality and technical excellence of the timepiece.
