A pink gold, enamel, diamond and pearl-set minute repeating perpetual calendar single button chronograph hunting case keyless lever watch with moon phases, leap year indication and enamel dial, Made for the Russian market, Circa 1890

Dial: white enamel, Roman numerals, outer seconds divisions, four subsidiary dials for month and leap year, day, date and moon phases with constant seconds and lunar calendar

Calibre: cal. 21''' gilt-finished lever mechanical movement, 35 jewels, bi-metallic compensation balance, minute repeating on two hammers, perpetual calendar, moon phases and chronograph

Case: 18k pink gold hunter case, translucent green and red enamel over engine-turned background, diamond and pearl-set floral motifs, gold cuvette with blue and black enamel inscription

Tchetounoff Frères (also known as Bratya Chetunovy) was a prominent Russian-Swiss watch trading house founded in Moscow in 1856 by brothers Ivan and Pavel Chetunov. The firm specialized in high-grade timepieces and worked with leading Swiss manufacturers to supply complicated watches to the Russian market. The present surviving example features a movement combining a minute repeater, a perpetual calendar and a single button chronograph inside a substantial case of 57 mm. The hunting case features two sides of translucent green and red enamel, the front featuring a floral pattern, both embellished with diamonds and pearls. Beyond its impressive technical complexity, the present watch offers a fascinating glimpse into the close relationship between Russian collectors and the finest Swiss watchmakers during the late nineteenth century, a period when highly complicated timepieces were commissioned for some of the Russian Empire's most discerning clientele.
