The present lot was created for the Compagnie des Arts Français in 1950 and is accompanied by a letter from the artist's granddaughter by marriage.
Hand-carved from richly figured flame mahogany, this work captures Alexandre Noll’s extraordinary command of wood as both medium and subject, occupying a singular space where sculpture and functional furniture converge. At the heart of Noll’s practice was a deep respect for material integrity, and this cabinet reflects that conviction fully — the mahogany’s innate grain, color, and texture are left to speak for themselves, celebrated rather than concealed. It is precisely this philosophy that defined the mode of woodworking Noll made his own: one in which the organic character of the material shapes the work, rather than being subordinated to it.
The cabinet’s generous scale and seamlessly refined surfaces are a testament to the technical authority Noll developed over a lifetime in the craft. Rooted in years working within his family’s workshop, his approach to cabinetmaking is marked by an almost intuitive precision — each component fitting naturally into the next, the construction feeling inevitable rather than labored. What emerges is a piece that honors wood in its most elemental form, a defining example of Noll’s ability to elevate everyday function into something deeply considered and enduring.
