Description

The brilliant-cut diamond weighing 28.88 carats.

Accompanied by GIA report no. 2239353167, dated 17 February 2026, stating that the diamond is D colour, Flawless, Excellent Cut, Polish and Symmetry; Also accompanied by a diamond type classification letter stating that the diamond is determined to be a Type IIa diamond. Type IIa diamonds are the most chemically pure type of diamond and often have exceptional optical transparency.

The unveiling of the de Beers Jwaneng 28.88 marks the beginning of a new collaboration between De Beers and Sotheby’s to present exceptional diamonds as works of art. The stones headline our Sotheby’s Hong Kong auction, highlighting their origin, craftsmanship, and cultural significance, mapping out the journey from mine to market.

At the heart of the collaboration is the de Beers Jwaneng 28.88, a rare diamond discovered at Botswana’s legendary Jwaneng mine, a place whose name translates as “a place of small stones” marking the excitement as the 114.83-carat rough diamond was discovered, meticulously analyzed and cut into a 28.88-carat round brilliant stone of exceptional quality. Certified D colour and flawless clarity, with excellent polish and symmetry, the diamond is also classified as Type IIa, the most chemically pure category of natural diamond. Alongside the de Beers Jwaneng 28.88, two lots of comparable colour and quality will be offered without reserve with a portion of the sale proceeds donated to benefit the Peace Parks Foundation, specifically the Kavango Zambezi (KAZA) project.

Long before humanity began telling stories, the Earth was already writing one of its own. Deep beneath the surface, under immense pressure and heat, carbon slowly transformed into crystals of extraordinary clarity. Diamonds were born silent witnesses to the earliest chapters of our planet. Formed billions of years before the first human gaze ever met their light, they carry within them the memory of deep time.

Each diamond carries subtle traces of its origin: the immense pressures that formed it, the geological pathways that brought it to the surface, and the landscapes that eventually revealed it.

Today, diamonds continue to fascinate not only for their origins, but for the way they interact with light and design.

In the hands of master craftsmen, rough stones are transformed through cutting and polishing into objects of extraordinary brilliance. De Beers diamonds embody this unique dialogue between nature and human creativity. Each facet is carefully positioned to reveal the stone’s natural radiance.

A diamond jewel represents two ultimate forms of artistry: nature’s creation and human craftsmanship. The result is a work of art designed to be worn.
