Harry Winston is most often celebrated for their appreciation of the diamond alone, yet the house's use of colored stones reveals the same guiding principle: to make the gemstones shine. These earrings showcase Colombian emeralds, which are prized for a bluish-green saturation and rich depth of color that stones from Zambia or Brazil don’t often achieve. This distinction may be traced to the geological conditions unique to Colombia's mining regions, where emeralds form in sedimentary rather than metamorphic rock, a rarity in nature that produces a quality that collectors and gemologists have prized for centuries. Two emeralds that are so closely matched in both color and cut is a mark of considerable rarity, given how few Colombian stones of this quality and size emerge from the mines that are large enough, clean enough, and consistent enough in tone to be united in a single design.

Harry Winston was founded in New York in 1932, building on years spent in his father's jewelry business and his own early ventures buying and reselling estate jewelry through the Depression era. He distinguished himself through an unparalleled instinct for acquiring extraordinary diamonds, purchasing famous stones such as the Hope Diamond and the Jonker Diamond, then recutting or resetting them, a practice that earned him the title "King of Diamonds." By the 1970s, the house was expanding its international presence, opening salons abroad and continuing to produce the elaborate colored stone and diamond jewelry that would come to define its output during that decade.
