Few gemstones have captivated the international collecting community in recent years as have Paraíba tourmalines. Named after the region of northeastern Brazil where they were first discovered in the late 1980s, this rare variety is distinguished by its vivid green to blue color that, when bearing sufficient levels of copper, take on a neon or “electric” appearance.

The present collection was acquired by the scion of an American communications empire founded in the early 1900s. Through his work fundraising for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, he befriended a member one of Colorado’s premier jewelry firms who introduced him to Paraíba tourmalines, then essentially unknown to all but the most serious “rockhounds.” He soon caught the collecting bug, and the call went out to find the best examples in the market, resulting in the five exceptionally clean and vibrant examples offered here.
