Description

Of geometric design, centering three octagonal step-cut emeralds, extending to a line of graduated old European-cut diamonds, further decorated throughout with rose- and old European-cut diamonds, length approximately 7⅛ inches, signed Dreicer & Co.; circa 1925.

At the turn of the twentieth century, Dreicer & Co. stood among the foremost jewelers in America, renowned for handling some of the era’s most exceptional diamonds and pearls. Founded in New York by Jacob and Gittel Dreicer following their arrival from Europe in 1866, the firm quickly established a reputation for uncompromising quality and connoisseurship, attracting an elite clientele during the height of the Gilded Age. Though less widely recognized today than some of their contemporaries, Dreicer & Co. was once regarded on par with the great international houses, their Fifth Avenue salons synonymous with rarity, discernment and discretion.

The present jewels exemplify the sophisticated restraint that distinguished Dreicer’s designs. A brooch (lot 61) composed as a simple line of old European-cut diamonds demonstrates the firm’s confidence in the intrinsic beauty of exceptional stones, while the emerald and diamond bracelet (lot 62) reflects the geometric elegance and technical refinement associated with early twentieth-century platinum work. Its pierced openwork design achieves a remarkable sense of lightness and fluidity, balancing architectural precision with delicacy. As signed jewels by Dreicer & Co. appear only infrequently on the market, these pieces represent rare survivals from one of America’s most important early jewelry houses.
