This trunk was acquired in Paris by Alice Lovering (1867–1941) circa 1900 and was subsequently shipped to Hotel Waldorf in New York prior to its merger in 1902 with the Astoria Hotel. The original shipping label remains affixed to the interior lid. The trunk later passed to Alice's sister, Frances "Franny" Lovering Adams (1869–1956), wife of Charles Francis Adams III (1866–1954), a descendant of President John Quincy Adams, former United States Secretary of the Navy, and accomplished lawyer, businessman and politician. In 1919, Robert Henry Barr (1872–1973) entered the service of Charles Francis and Frances Adams as a chauffeur, a position he held for nearly four decades. During the 1950s, the Adams family gifted the trunk, along with other household furnishings to the Barr family. Around 1970, Robert Henry Barr gave the trunk to his grandson, with whom it has remained with ever since.
